How to select and store a kiwifruit

Picking the perfect kiwi

Hold kiwi in palm of hand and squeeze gently. A ripe kiwi will yield to slight pressure like an avocado or peach. Green Kiwi tastes sweeter when ripe. SunGold Kiwi tastes sweeter when softer.

To ripen, leave out at room temperature for 3-7 days. Ripe kiwifruit can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Are there allergies to kiwis?

Yes, a small number of people are allergic to Green Kiwifruit. The reactions vary from mild to severe. In a very few severe cases, treatment by a doctor or a hospital may be necessary, particularly in young children. Other symptoms include marked swelling and itching of lips and tongue within a few minutes of eating kiwifruit. Itchy nose and eyes may also be experienced. The symptoms usually disappear within 30 minutes. Consult your doctor for more information.

Cooking with Zespri

Zespri Green and SunGold kiwifruit make bright and delicious additions to many recipes. They work well in spicy salsas, tropical drinks and even in marinades. Here are a few more serving ideas for this versatile fruit.

Add to yogurt, smoothies, hot and cold cereal. Fan slices of kiwis and serve as a topping for quick breads and pancakes. Include with kebabs for colorful party finger-foods.

Add sliced green and gold kiwifruit to mixed fruit or green salads, pasta and chicken salads. Mash or blend one kiwifruit with your favorite vinaigrette for a fruity twist to salad dressing.

Slice within sandwiches for sweet, juicy tanginess. Toss within sweet and savory salads, pair with jams and nut butters on grainy bread for a scrumptious sandwich.

Blend into soups and create zesty tropical salsas. Kiwis match well with bold flavors for fish, chicken, and Mexican dishes. Substitute within Asian-style recipes that call for fruit and add to cooked entrées, sautés, and stir-fries.

Puree kiwifruit with lemonade and freeze in small cups for a popsicle treat. You can also freeze the mixture in an ice cream maker for a simple and easy sorbet.

Use chopped kiwifruit as a topping for cereal, pancakes or waffles. Or fold chopped kiwifruit into pancake or waffle batter before cooking.

Green and SunGold kiwis can make a bright and healthy splash on fruit and cheese trays.

Slice Green or SunGold kiwi and freeze solid. Dip each slice in chocolate to cover 1/2 to 2/3 of the kiwifruit slice. Return to freezer and freeze until firm.

Things to Keep In Mind

Some important things to keep in mind while creating your own delicious meals and recipes.

The skin is edible on both varieties. The SunGold Kiwi has no hair which makes it easier to bite into like an apple. Be sure to rinse your kiwi first.

If you insist on peeling, a serrated peeler works best.

The enzyme actinidin found in Green kiwifruit makes for a natural meat tenderizer. Simply peel and mash a kiwi and spread the pulp on a tough cut of meat. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes and then lightly scrape off, discarding the kiwi.

The actinidin in Green also prevents gelatin from setting and breaks down proteins in dairy products which can cause curdling. If serving Green Kiwifruit with ice cream, yogurt or other dairy products, serve immediately after you add to your dish.

When puréeing be sure to stop processing before the seeds are crushed. Crushed seeds may lend a slightly bitter flavor to your dish. Seeds can be removed by passing the pulp through a strainer.

When using kiwifruit in hot dishes, add it at the very last minute so that it will retain its bright color. Kiwi flesh is soft so it is recommended that you add later when cooking certain dishes like a stir-fry.
