Jeff and Shirley Roderick
Te Puke, New Zealand – GREEN and GOLD ORGANIC
Generations of Rodericks have worked this land, originally as a dairy farm. Jeff recognized that the soil and climate were perfectly suited for Kiwifruit and was one of the first commercial kiwifruit orchards in New Zealand to attain organic certification.
Jeff’s approach to orchard management has always been minimalist with regard to chemical input, so the move to organic certification for his GREEN and GOLD Kiwifruit orchard was in keeping with his philosophy.
It did however pose some challenges for him in controlling pests and plant diseases. As an industry leader in organic orchard practices, Jeff has worked closely with New Zealand’s leading horticultural research organizations to trial various organic oils and spray protocols that have now become established practices for organic orchards.
“The value of the kiwifruit vine is in the roots and soil,” explains Jeff, “It is critical to tend this and protect this at all cost. Organic certification ensures that as growers we nurture nature, and help her to do her best work.”
After meticulously tending to his kiwifruit vines across the growth season, Jeff’s favorite part of the year is the kiwifruit harvest. This is when he sees the results of his hard work as the fruit is gently picked and transported to the packhouse in preparation for packing for export.
“The busy harvest period is special in so many ways. It is the culmination of all of our efforts as well as a time to share and celebrate with staff, friends and family,” say Jeff and Shirley. “There is a strong sense of tradition here. We have long-standing relationships with our orchard workers, their families and our foreign casual staff. We often gather around the table for home-cooked meals together.”
The traditions and passionate approach to life that are such a part of this family orchard are embodied in every piece of ORGANIC Kiwifruit that leaves the gates.
