Delivering ZESPRI® – Transport
Shipping and transporting kiwifruit is responsible for the greatest carbon output in the ZESPRI® Kiwifruit supply chain – 35% of all emissions. This provides the greatest opportunity for reductions in emissions.
ZESPRI ships 77% of its kiwifruit on highly efficient refrigerated vessels (reefers). By chartering ships ZESPRI can optimise the route and operation of the vessels maximising efficiency and minimising emissions. Through shipping directly to strategic port locations, subsequent transportation is minimised.
“Our strong relationships with shipping partners have allowed us to initiate several sustainability programmes to make emission reductions a reality” says Mike Knowles, Shipping Manager ZESPRI.
