Kiwifruit Receive a "Perfect" Nutrition Score
The new NuVal Ranking System can be a useful tool to help your clients compare the nutritional profiles of all food. Unveiled at ADA FNCE in 2008, the system allows consumers to see -at a glance- the nutritional value of the food they buy. Kiwifruit receive a perfect score of 100 on the NuVal nutritional ranking system, which scores the nutritional value of a food with a single number on a scale of 1 to 100. The score is based on a system developed by the Yale Griffin Hospital Prevention Research Center called the Overall Nutrition Quality Index, which allows for simple comparison across all food categories. The NuVal system can be a clear and powerful way for clients to track SuperFoods with one easy number. While vegetables and fruits tend to score very high on the range of NuVal scores, they aren’t all created equal. Kiwifruit scored higher than grapefruit, pineapple, plums, apples, mangos, pomegranates and grapes, among other fruits. Scores vary in the produce category based on concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber, in particular. Those at the very top of the range, such as kiwifruit, are very highly concentrated in many nutrients and low in calories. For example, one serving of ZESPRI® GREEN Kiwifruit (two medium fruit) provides 4 grams of fiber and 230 percent of the daily vitamin C requirement for only 90 calories. If the scoring system isn’t available yet at grocery stores in your region, you can still use the online resources at www.nuval.com. View the full comparison list between fruits and vegetables here.
